Replay Recorder: free screen recorder for Windows

Press a key. Keep the play.

Replay Recorder runs in your Windows tray and keeps the last seconds of your game. Press a hotkey to save them as a clip on your PC, then publish the best ones to Replay.

Free · Windows 10 (version 2004) or 11 · 148 MB

Windows will warn you about this installer because it isn't signed yet.

From play to profile in three steps

Keep playing. The Recorder stays in the tray and gets out of your way.

Let it run

The Recorder keeps the last seconds of your screen on your PC, so you don't have to start recording before the good part.

Press your hotkey

The last seconds are saved as an MP4 in your clip library. The default hotkey is Ctrl+Shift+F10, and you can change it.

Trim and publish

Sign in with your Replay account, trim the clip, pick a cover, add a title and the game, choose who can see it and publish. Clips you don't publish stay on your PC.

Built for the plays you didn't see coming

Instant replay buffer

Keeps the last 15, 30 or 60 seconds of gameplay and saves them as an MP4 when you press the hotkey. No need to start recording first.

Global hotkey

Works while you play, in any program. Pick your own combination; the app tells you if another program already uses it.

Audio your way

Record the game's sound (the default), all system sound, your microphone, any mix of them, or no sound at all.

Local clip library

See your saved clips with thumbnails and lengths, play them and delete them. Clips stay on your PC until you publish one.

Trim without re-encoding

Cut a clip down to the part you want. The picture isn't re-encoded, so it takes about a second and loses no quality. The start snaps to a whole second.

Publish from the app

Add a title, tags, the game and who can see it, pick a cover from four frames of your clip and upload it straight to your Replay profile.

Optional account

Record and save clips without signing in. To publish, you sign in on the Replay website: the app never sees your password.

Low-disk warnings

Won't save a clip when your drive has less than 1 GB free, and warns you when your saved clips take up 10 GB or more.

Updates itself

Checks for a new version about once a day and downloads it in the background. It never restarts on its own: it installs when you next quit, or when you click Restart now.

From your PC to your profile

Pick a clip in the library and press Publish. Check the title, the game and who can see it, trim the clip if you like, choose a cover and send it.

The same limits as the website: up to 60 seconds, 1080p and 200 MB

Counts toward your daily profile posts: 1 a day on the free plan, more with a paid plan

The video goes from your PC straight to Replay's storage, never through our servers

In PowerShell, go to the folder with the file and run this command. The result must match the SHA-256 above.

Download only from this page. The installer isn't signed yet.

Windows will show a warning

The installer isn't signed with a publisher certificate yet, so Windows SmartScreen says “Windows protected your PC”. That is expected. To go on:

Check the SHA-256 of the file against the one on this page.

  1. Open the file you downloaded, ReplayRecorderApp-win-Setup.exe.
  2. On the “Windows protected your PC” screen, click More info.
  3. Click Run anyway.
  4. Replay Recorder installs for your user only, without an administrator prompt, and adds a Start menu shortcut.

Questions, answered

Is Replay Recorder free?

Yes. The app is free, and so is a Replay account, which you only need to publish clips.

Why does Windows warn me when I open the installer?

The installer isn't signed with a publisher certificate yet, so Windows SmartScreen doesn't recognise it and shows “Windows protected your PC”. Before you go on, check that the file's SHA-256 matches the one shown in the download section of this page (in PowerShell, run Get-FileHash on the file). Only download it from this page. If it matches, click More info, then Run anyway; if it doesn't, delete the file. If you'd rather not, you can keep uploading clips from the website.

Which games does it work with?

It records a screen, not a particular game, so it can record any game you see on that screen. When you save a clip it notes which program was in front and uses that to suggest the game in the publish form; you always confirm it.

Will it slow down my game?

It captures with Windows Graphics Capture and encodes with your graphics card's video encoder when it can, so the processor does little of the work. We haven't published performance measurements yet, so the cost depends on your PC and your game.

Where are my clips stored?

On your PC, in %LocalAppData%\ReplayRecorder\clips, until you publish them. While the Recorder runs it also keeps the last seconds in short temporary files in a buffer folder; they are not uploaded and are deleted when recording stops or the app starts again. Uninstalling removes the program but keeps your clips and settings.

Do published clips count toward my daily posts?

Yes. A clip published from the app goes to your profile, so it uses one of your profile posts for the day, like a clip uploaded to your profile on the website. The free plan has 1 profile post a day and paid plans have more. The app checks the limits (60 seconds, 1080p, 200 MB) before publishing, and once you have used the day's posts, publishing is refused until they come back at midnight UTC.

Can I use it without a Replay account?

Yes. Recording, saving, playing and deleting clips all work signed out. To publish, the app opens the Replay website in your browser to sign in, so it never sees your password. You can unlink the app at any time in Settings, under Connected apps.

How does it update?

About once a day it checks for a new version and downloads it in the background. It never restarts on its own: the update installs the next time you quit from the tray menu, or right away if you click Restart now. You can turn automatic updates off in the app.
